Practical Nursing Education is designed to focus on a holistic approach to learning, progressing from simple to complex. This education builds on previous levels of knowledge and experience.

Practical nursing education is goal-directed and purposeful and includes the development of cognitive skills including critical thinking and analysis. Practical nursing education prepares entry level nurses to provide competent care for clients with commonly occurring health problems having predictable outcomes.

Putnam Career & Technical Center (PCTC) is pleased to provide nursing education to Putnam and surrounding counties in order to meet the need for the growing number of licensed practical nurses.
The program consists of classroom and clinical instruction for 12 months.

Students interested in the Practical Nursing program at PCTC should be patient and compassionate. Students will also need to be drug free.

Students must:

• complete a TEAS V Entrance Assessment.

• have a pre-admission physical, a drug screen, a tuberculosis skin test or chest x-ray, immunization for Hepatitis B, as well as other immunizations as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control.

• have a Federal and State criminal history and background check (see note below)

Note:
The State Licensed Practical Nursing Board reserves the right to refuse to admit applicants to the licensure exam who have been convicted of a felony, are habitually intemperate, are addicted to habit forming drugs, are mentally incompetent, or are guilty of professional misconduct as defined by the state board. In addition to this any applicant who received disciplinary action from one of our training facilities will not be admitted.

Students must maintain a passing grade in each course to continue in the program.

Students are required to wear scrub uniforms, clinic shoes, jackets and a watch with a second hand.

Adult General Admission Requirements

This program participates in the West Virginia Department of Education Simulated Workplace environment. Simulated Workplace Information and Requirements

Students will be provided with any technology instruction, devices and software required.

Students may enroll in HOSA and the Student Nurses Association

1 Academic Year (12 months) – 1350 clock hours (Adult full-time enrollment) consisting of ten (10) courses with clock hours ranging from 40 to 450 depending on the course.

Students completing the Practical Nursing program and obtaining an Authorization to Test (ATT) may apply to test for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN) by registering with Pearson VUE. To obtain specific information, see the Practical Nursing Student Handbook, the Practical Nursing Clinical Handbook, and the National Council of State Boards of Nursing. Completion of an application and submission of fees are required for licensure exam registration.

This course is designed to properly prepare students for entry into the practical nursing profession. Entry-level practice is regulated through the West Virginia State Board of Examiners for Licensed Practical Nurses who is a member of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). NCSBN develops a licensure examination, the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical/Vocational Nurses (NCLEX-PN®), which is used by the West Virginia State Board of Examiners for Licensed Practical Nurses to assist in making licensure decisions. This course is an outline of the NCLEX-PN Test Plan. The NCLEX-PN Test Plan is updated every three years. The test plan is updated more frequently than our framework in some skill sets, please reference the most current test plan available at the National Council of State Boards of Nursing website. This ensures that instructors are teaching the most up to date material available. Instruction will incorporate project and problem‐based healthcare practices and procedures to demonstrate the criticality of these skills. Due to healthcare industry standards, exemplary attendance is mandatory. Students utilize problem-solving techniques and participate in hands‐on activities to develop an understanding of course concepts. Teachers should provide each student with real world learning opportunities and instruction. Students are encouraged to become active members of the student organization, HOSA-Future Health Professionals. All West Virginia teachers are responsible for classroom instruction that integrates learning skills, technology tools and content skill sets. This course is developed to meet the minimum 1300 hours of requirements as required by the West Virginia State Board of Examiners for Licensed Practical Nurses, and the nursing assistant certification exam offered by OHFLAC http://www.wvdhhr.org/ohflac/NA/Education.aspx. Clinical experiences must be integrated into the class to meet the West Virginia Board of Practical Nursing educational laws and requirements. http://www.lpnboard.state.wv.us.
